Question Format:

The exam is divided into two stages. In the first stage, candidates have 5 minutes to write based on the given proposition. In the second stage, candidates will receive a new proposition and have 3 minutes to further create based on the content of the first stage's writing.

c. Score Calculation:

The scores from this section will be included in two separate scores: "Literacy" (reading and writing abilities) and "Production" (expression abilities).

Strategies for Answering Interactive Writing Questions

1. The first step is to write for 5 minutes on a given topic. Based on the previous writing question type, such as "Read, Then Write," which also required writing for five minutes and aiming for 50 words, it can be inferred that the new writing question's first step also requires at least 50 words. However, it's possible to write around 70-80 words within five minutes with practice. According to the sample answer provided by the official source, the word count reached 89 words, which aligns with the prediction.

2. The second step involves further response within three minutes. Based on the word count of the first question, this question can be answered with around 50 words. The second step actually does not have different question content based on the first step's answer. Both questions together do not differ significantly from previous reading and writing content. However, since the previous requirement was to write a paragraph for five minutes, now it's essentially writing for eight minutes, which increases the importance due to the extended time.

3. Many candidates wonder if templates are applicable to this question type. Regarding templates, there have been many discussions since the introduction of TOEFL and IELTS exams, and Duolingo has gained popularity in recent years. Additionally, with computer scoring, people tend to rely on templates more. However, are templates really useful? If one needs to spend time searching for which template to use within limited time, and then only manages to write half a sentence, wasting one or two minutes, it's not worth it.

*Tips: Here insert the recommanded template to excel Interactive Writing!

1. Tell your point of view first

2. Tell the reason

3. Show the example or evidence to proof your view

4. Emphasize again

4. Of course, templates have some utility for comparison or analysis of pros and cons type questions. However, templates are only frameworks. Don't waste time piling up templates, leaving no time to express your own viewpoint. Otherwise, that piece of writing becomes a skeleton.

Additional Resources

By understanding all the new question types, utilizing the provided templates, and practicing with sample questions, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle this new challenge in the Duolingo English Test 2024. Candidates need to demonstrate their competency in understanding written texts and creating written content, including information processing, content organization, and language use.

c.Conversation

This combines listening and speaking skills, assessing the candidate’s performance in actual communication situations. Candidates need to understand information in conversations and respond appropriately, showing fluent and natural communication ability.

d.Production

This combines speaking and writing skills, assessing the candidate’s ability in both oral and written expression. Candidates need to express their thoughts clearly and coherently, demonstrating good vocabulary use and grammar mastery.

According to the official explanation, composite skill scores are closely related to individual skill scores. Each composite skill score is the average of its corresponding two individual skill scores:

Conversation = (Listening + Speaking) / 2

Comprehension = (Listening + Reading) / 2

Production = (Speaking + Writing) / 2

Literacy = (Writing + Reading) / 2

Currently, as it is the school application season, this reform is unlikely to affect applications before the new academic year, and schools are unlikely to adjust their admission scores based on the new subscores.

However, starting this September, universities accepting Duolingo as an entrance language exam are very likely to adjust their admission policies to include requirements for individual skills in "listening, speaking, reading, and writing."

How will this reform affect your exam preparation? 【2024 Update】Duolingo English Test's New Question Types Analysis is Here! Are You Ready?
2024-04-19 17:18

Introduction

Since the official release of the 2024 reform notice by Duolingo Official a month ago, some students have been anxious and nervous, while others are confident and prepared. However, some students are like - Huh? Duolingo English Test changed again?! That's right! This exam underwent significant reform on April 3, 2024! The revamped Duolingo English Test is now officially available! In this article, we will explore all the new updates including the new question types.

Comparison between New Questions and Old Questions

Question Type 1. Read & Select (New)

Firstly, there has been a change in the format of word differentiation, which we refer to as " Read & Select (New)."

Specifically, the answer format for Read & Select (New) has shifted from a single-screen answer where multiple words are displayed simultaneously to a multi-screen answer where only one word is displayed per screen. Test-takers still need to read the word and determine if it is a correct English word. This section comprises 15-18 questions in total, still affecting the sub-scores of Literacy and Comprehension.

The new answer format enhances the efficiency of the test, allowing for a more accurate assessment of the test-taker's vocabulary.

Considering difficulty, the new and old versions of Read & Select (New) are relatively similar in difficulty. The simplification of this question type is mainly aimed at improving the efficiency of the exam. Previously, an average of 4 word differentiation questions appeared in one exam, taking a total of 4 minutes. However, answering a single question in the new Read & Select (New) format only requires 5 seconds, and 15-18 questions only consume 1 minute 15 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds, thereby freeing up time for another new question type (Fill in the Blanks), strengthening the assessment of vocabulary application.

Question Type 2. Fill in the Blanks

Fill in the Blanks is a brand-new question type in the Duolingo English Test. In this question type, each sentence contains an incomplete word, with the missing part represented by a blank space. Test-takers have 20 seconds to complete the missing part of the word. There are a total of 6-9 Fill in the Blanks questions, which will affect the sub-scores of Literacy and Comprehension.

Fill in the Blanks (New) will assess the breadth and depth of the test-taker's vocabulary, requiring not only recognition of words but also accurate usage of words within the given context.

It is believed that this question type may not be friendly to test-takers who struggle with vocabulary and reading comprehension. Moreover, under adaptive difficulty, the higher the level, the longer and more difficult the sentences provided. Additionally, considering the extremely limited time for answering this question type, test-takers have no spare time for contemplation. Therefore, as of now, Fill in the Blanks appears to be more challenging than the previous questions.

Question Type 3. Interactive Writing

In this reform, another brand-new question type has been introduced, called Interactive Writing.

This new question type is an expansion of the previous "Short Writing" question type, encouraging test-takers to further elaborate on their views and ideas in detail while also providing a better measure of their writing abilities.

Interactive Writing consists of two steps:

Step 1 presents a prompt, and test-takers are required to read the prompt and write accordingly within 5 minutes (with a minimum of 3 minutes for answering);

Step 2 builds upon the previous prompt by providing a new one, and test-takers need to read the new prompt and respond accordingly within 3 minutes (with a minimum of 1 minute for answering).

Interactive Writing will only appear once in the exam, impacting the sub-scores of Literacy and Production.

The questions in Part 2 are based on the responses given by the test-takers in Part 1. Dreamy DET has also listed the possible questions that may appear in Part 2, along with reference answers for all the questions, to facilitate comprehensive preparation for you.

Furthermore, it is important to note that with the introduction of Interactive Writing, the "Short Writing" section has been simultaneously discontinued.

Comparison in terms of the Number of Questions

Based on the changes in question types, the number of questions for the old question types has also changed accordingly:

The number of questions for Fill in the Blanks and Read Aloud has decreased, from the previous range of 4-6 questions to 3-6 questions.

Meanwhile, the number of questions for Dictation Sentences has increased, from the previous range of 4-6 questions to 6-9 questions.

Comparison in terms of the Question Sequence

Furthermore, there have been some changes in the sequence of questions in the exam.

At the beginning of the exam, there are consecutive 15-18 questions of Read & Select.

Next are consecutive 6-9 Fill in the Blanks questions.

Following this, the Fill in the Blanks, Read Aloud, and Dictation Sentences questions appear randomly.

Afterward, there are two Interactive Reading and two Interactive Listening questions.

Following these are the writing sections, consisting of three Write about the Photo questions and one Interactive Writing question.

Then comes the speaking section, which typically follows the order of Listen Then Speak, Speak About The Photo, and Read Then Speak.

Finally, there are the Writing Interview and Speaking Interview sections.

Additional Resources

By understanding all the new question types, utilizing the provided templates, and practicing with sample questions, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle this new challenge in the Duolingo English Test 2024. 【2024 New Question】Excelling in Duolingo English Test 2024 New Questions - Interactive Writing
2024-05-23 17:02

Introduction

Duolingo English Test is introducing a new question type, Interactive Writing in April 2024. Excelling it is crucial for achieving a higher writing score. In this article, we will show the brief introduction of the Interactive Writing question, and strategies for answering it effectively, and provide you with templates to help you succeed.

Overview of Interactive Writing

a. Brief View:

Interactive Writing is an extension of the existing "Read, then Write" reading and writing question. It aims to assess students' subjective expression abilities, encouraging candidates to develop deeper viewpoints and thoughts on given topics.

Step 1 presents a prompt, and test-takers are required to read the prompt and write accordingly within 5 minutes (with a minimum of 3 minutes for answering);
