Introduction
Duolingo English Test ("DET") is an online English proficiency assessment test for today's international students and institutions. So far, more than 5,000 universities around the world have recognized Duolingo English Test. It takes less than an hour of testing to accurately and objectively assess the candidate's English proficiency from many aspects. During the exam, you need to complete the following three parts:
Process and Question Types of Duolingo English Test
1. Introduction and Preparation (approximately 5 minutes):
Complete device setup to ensure the computer's camera, speakers, and microphone are functioning properly. Use the computer's camera to take and upload a real-time photo of your ID. Familiarize yourself with the test rules and requirements.
2. Adaptive Testing (approximately 45 minutes):
The Duolingo English Test utilizes computer-adaptive technology, where the order and difficulty of the questions will vary based on the candidate's responses. Questions are not grouped by type and will appear randomly, including various types of listening, speaking, reading, and writing tasks.
The frequency of different question types varies, and the number of each type is not fixed for each test and candidate. Duolingo English Test periodically updates and adjusts question types.
3. Writing Sample & Speaking Sample (approximately 10 minutes):
Duolingo English Test includes completing a Writing Sample and a Speaking Sample. Each sample will have a designated topic, and candidates are required to fully express themselves based on the prompt.
Important Notes
- Throughout the exam, ensure your face (eyes, ears, mouth) remains visible in the camera frame without obstruction and is clearly visible. Do not wear headphones or earplugs.
- Keep your gaze on the screen at all times, only lowering your head to look at the keyboard when typing. Do not look away from the screen at any other time.
- Do not move the mouse pointer outside the test window at any time.
- Prohibited from using any auxiliary tools, smartphones, or other devices.
- Prohibited from taking notes or using pen and paper.
- Speak only when required by the question; otherwise, remain silent to avoid making noise.
- After the test, Duolingo proctors will review the test recording to ensure no violations of test rules occurred.

The practice test duration is shorter, and there is no proctoring. Practice test scores may not accurately reflect official test scores.
Test Preparation
- A computer: Desktop or laptop computer with a functioning front-facing camera, microphone, and speakers. The camera should ideally be positioned centrally above the display or screen.
- Valid identification: Note that only originals can be used; photocopies or photos cannot be used as substitutes.
- In a quiet, well-lit room: No other individuals should be present in the room.
- Completely undisturbed, quiet 60-minute time.
Test Environment
- Ensure you remain in the camera frame at all times, without headphones, ensuring your face is clearly visible and not obscured by sunglasses or other accessories. Keep your eyes fixed on the screen and avoid glancing around, especially during speaking tasks.
- Ensure the background is clean and bright, avoiding places with fabric coverings or glass mirrors and eliminating any areas that could raise suspicion.
- Maintain a quiet environment, silence your phone, and turn off other sound-emitting devices.
- If taking the test at night, ensure the lighting is steady without flickering.
Test Operations
- Must take the test on a computer!!! It's important.
- Use an English input method without associations; other language input methods may be considered cheating.
- Use the official recommended browser, such as Chrome/Opera, and close browser plugins. Mid-test pop-ups from plugins will also terminate the test.
- Before the formal start of the test, you will be asked to take a photo of your ID, with a three-second countdown.
- When taking the photo, do not show your face, only your ID should be visible. If you entered your passport information earlier, take a photo of your passport; if you entered your ID information, take a photo of your ID.
- When entering your name, be sure to use Chinese characters; your English name will appear below.
- Ensure that the personal information provided matches your passport or ID exactly.
Score Reporting
The score range for the Duolingo English Test is 10-160 points, with 5-point increments, and a maximum score of 160 points. The test results are valid for 2 years.
Unlike other tests, in addition to listening, speaking, reading, and writing, the Duolingo English Test places more emphasis on candidates' comprehensive language skills. Natural and fluent language application and effective expression depend on the simultaneous application of multiple skills, especially in academic environments.
The Duolingo English Test's individual scores are divided into four categories: Literacy (reading and writing abilities), Comprehension (listening and reading abilities), Conversation (listening and speaking abilities), and Production (writing and speaking abilities).
